Tom Donnelly is a banking and finance expert, with over 25 years of practice in bankruptcies, acquisitions, divestitures, workouts and restructuring. He has led steering committees in negotiations with CEO’s and CFO’s of distressed companies and their professionals and has restructured syndicated credit facilities both in and out of Chapter 11. He has also negotiated divestitures, liquidations and restructures in the U.S. and Latin America. He is a decisive leader who has worked with distressed companies and guided lenders and businesses through difficult situations. Tom has worked on a wide range of industries including retail, commercial real estate, consumer products, manufacturing, media, financials, energy, agriculture and auto parts suppliers.
During his tenure in loan workout, Tom led teams of loan workout officers recovering defaulted loans through renegotiation of loan terms, conversion of debt to equity and sales of assets both within and outside bankruptcy. He negotiated DIP loans and exit facilities in syndicated credits for distressed leveraged buyouts.
Tom is currently a consultant and expert witness. He advises clients in all aspects of loan workout and distressed debt. Including liquidating trustee roles, CRO and board of director assignments. Tom is also an instructor for the Risk Management Association, a trade group for commercial lending. Subjects he currently teaches include Problem Real Estate Loans, Detecting Problem Loans and Problem Loan Workouts. Tom has also served as an expert witness in litigation where he was retained by a major US Bank.
Tom recently headed the loan workout group for Webster Bank, a Connecticut based super regional bank. Prior to Webster, he led the workout units at both UBS Investment Bank and GE Capital where he was responsible for overseeing distressed asset loan portfolios worth billions of dollars. At CIT, he was hired in response to a consent decree mandating increased acumen in the loan workout group. At The Receivables Exchange, he was hired to bring best in class workout acumen to this innovative factoring platform.
Tom directly managed and led numerous lender steering committees in several well-known distressed restructurings for middle market borrowers including television stations, steel producer, retail chains and oil service providers.
Tom has testified in court hearings, arbitrations and depositions in both federal and state courts.
As a seasoned distressed practitioner, he is sensitive to the fiduciary duties of officers and directors of distressed companies.
Tom received a Master of Finance and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Widener University. He is a frequent speaker on distressed and defaulted loans at various trade functions as well as having spoken at Kellogg School of Management, Quinnipiac Law School and the Connecticut Bar Association.
